Any car post '97 needs to go through an ESVA (Enhanced Single Vehicle Approval) test. This is to prove that the car conforms to our UK standards for things like noise, emissions, safety, etc. The model report is basically where a car has been brought into the country from abroad and had various lengthy and costly tests carried out on it (we're talking in thousands of pounds here!), and a report then produced with the rights to that report being owned by the individual or company that had these tests done. You and I then have to rent the model report so that our ESVA people can use the information in it to test our own newly imported cars against, in order to prove conformity. So if a model report for any given car doesn't exist, you would not be able to get the car on the road over here as it would not be capable of passing the ESVA test. These reports are model specific, so your car would need to be the same as the original one used to produce the report. In other words, if a report doesn't exist for the car you want, you had best look at something else!!!!! I have heard horror stories of people bringing cars in without a model report being available, only to find they can't register it here and of course can then not sell it either! So look around for a report on the car you are after first before engaging in the buying process as it will save a lot of heartache. I have had a few headaches with my Estima, as although the report was available my car wasn't exactly the same as the original car used (it has been modified here and there, see left) so I had to get a few things changed before presenting it for its ESVA test.
Hope that helps a bit! :D
