msdunn, I see that you have brought in quite a few cars from your posts in the forums. I live in West Yorks, can you tell me how much you think I could bid up to if I was looking to spend ?10-12k.

Thanks

Hi MidNite

To give you a rough idea, my car was won at just under 1,700,000 JPY, before FOB and all the rest of it. My final total was around ?14,000 on the road, so on that basis you would be looking at about 1,200,000 - 1,450,000 JPY bidding price to get it on the road for 10-12k. Bear in mind mine is a big MPV and so shipping might have been more costly than yours may be, plus at this end I had ESVA costs in that figure which you may not need, so you could possibly allow a little extra to your highest bid price. It all depends on what type and age of car you're after really.

Of course you could get msdunn to do all the hard work for you and get a car from him as he's in your area!!!! :D :D :D

Thanks again Glanma, it would be nice if there was a formula that could be used to give people a rough idea of what thier costs were going to be. Once I have a good idea of the workings of this, I might try to do a spreadsheet that lets you put in a few figures and work the rest out for you, what do you think.

Regards

Sounds like a great idea - I reckon it's the most frequently asked question on here. Myself and some of the others have tried to help when someone pops up with this question, but it's a bit difficult to be precise because of all the variables depending on what cars are being brought in - but you could probably give a good guide with a set formula.

Ok G, you could help me out with the variables and constants. The winning bid needs to be entered as does the fob price.
As far as I know. the extra transport cost may or may not be required, marine insurance should always be included (unless they are crazy).
The fixed costs are 10% duty and the 17.5% VAT, the fee to Autoadvan, I think there are a few others which are due when the car arrives in the UK. Could do with what they are and how they are applied.
It would also be an idea to add in a formula which converts from YEN to ?'s when they put in the current exchange rate. If you could let me have the factors that I do not have and we'll see if we can make this work.

MidNite :) :) :)

Midnite-D,

Dont know weather you have seen this but if not it might give you a starting point for you spreadsheet, car price variables will just have to be a plus sum, it would be nice to have a link to a exchange rate but that would be a nice to have, but I'm sure with the info you have it would be a really good start for a ball park figure,
Cheers Hammer

There is often confusion with regards to the total cost calculation of importing a Japanese car import vehicle into the UK. We shall now take you through step by step the costs involved in importing an import car from Japan.

An example has been used to help make things clearer. We shall start calculation from the stage where you have successfully bid on an import vehicle and the auction service fee of 300 GBP has been paid to Autoadvan.

1)Japanese car import auction winning bid price.

E.g. 200,000 Yen for a 1996 Nissan Skyline GTS-TM

2) FOB price. This is set a 120,000 Yen. This is the Free On Board Charges for shipment by ?Ro ? Ro? vessel. This includes the following

? Purchasing fee at auction

? Inland transport charge to bring import cars to the nearest shipping port

? Storage fee in a 24 hours secured yard until shipment (up to 30 days) if payment to Japan has been made within 3 working days of purchase.

? Customs clearance charge

? Charge to get import cars on board vessel

? Japanese import car documentation charge

E.g. 200,000 Yen ? Vehicle winning bid price
+120,000 Yen ? FOB Price
320,000 Yen ? Total

3) Ocean Freight. For a medium sized Japanese import car, this would cost around 100,000 Yen to Southampton in the U.K.

For a small vehicle such as an Mx-5, the cost of shipment to the UK is around 70,000 Yen.

For a very large vehicle, cost of shipment to UK is around 110,000 Yen
Marine Insurance is around 5000 Yen

E.g. 200,000 Yen ? Vehicle winning bid price
+120,000 Yen ? FOB Price
+100,000 Yen ? Ocean Freight to the UK
+5,000 Yen ? Marine Insurance (optional)
425,000 Yen ? Total

4) Import tax in UK is 10% of total so far.

415,000 Yen + 10% = 456,500 Yen

5) VAT is 17.5% of total so far.

456,500 Yen + 17.5% = 536,388 Yen

6) Shipping agent fee (if used) 170 GBP

If you wish for your Japanese import vehicle to be transported to another port for shipping or you wish to use an auction hall which incurs extra transport costs we have a table of charges for this which can be viewed. Extra transport charge is never more than 25,000 Yen. If you have any further questions please contact us at sales@Japaneseauctions.co.uk Question Question Question Question Question Cool

Thanks for the info Hammer. I have written the speadsheet and been testing it today with the figures from Romeo's post. I haven't tried to make it pretty as yet, just functional. The idea about a link to a site with the exchange rates is a good one and I have just tried that and could make it work but will just email it to a few people to test before posting it. If you want to have a look at it and give me some feedback, PM me with your email address.

BTW folks I am not that good with Excel, I really deal with Networking /System Administration.

Hey MidNite

Got your latest version - and in glorious technicolour too!!! I'd say go for it - and you don't need my approval either, there's plenty more experienced than me on here! I'm sure your efforts will be appreciated too, as you say it'll certainly help anyone who needs to get a handle on the costs. I might even start working out what my next car will be!!!! :D
